In this module you will learn about the latest UK guidelines and recommendations for the diagnosis and management of common gastrointestinal (GI) complaints in infants, specifically common functional GI disorders such as reflux, colic and constipation, in a primary care setting. This module is of particular relevance to GPs, Pharmacists and Health Visitors but will also be of use to other community practitioners looking to extend their knowledge of this area.

Diagnosis and management of common infant gastrointestinal complaints


This module provides a review of:

  • Overview of general symptoms of GI complaints in infants
  • Symptoms and diagnosis of functional GI disorders
  • Guidelines and approaches in the management of functional GI disorders, including parental support and education
  • Dietary management of functional GI disorders

After completing this module you will feel confident in diagnosing and managing common functional GI disorders such as reflux, colic and constipation in a primary care setting, as well as in providing parental education and reassurance during what can be a very distressing time for the family. You will also be familiar with the ‘red flag’ symptoms that may indicate a more serious GI disorder that should be referred to specialist care.
