Malnutrition in Children and Adolescents – Fundamentals

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • define malnutrition and summarize the prevalence of both undernutrition and overnutrition.
  • list the main causes and consequences of undernutrition in children and adolescents.
  • describe nutritional risk, nutritional screening tools, and nutrition assessment and how they can be used in children and adolescents.
  • explain the principles of nutritional management of undernutrition in children and adolescents.

Malnutrition encompasses both undernutrition and overnutrition. It is a global problem that affects many children worldwide, with varying prevalence depending age, gender, and region.

This course has been designed to provide an overview of malnutrition, with a focus on undernutrition, in children and adolescents aged 2–19 years. Topics include definitions, causes and consequences, identification, and management. It should take approximately 60 minutes to complete.
